The time is between 1873 and 1874. Dick Stapleton, a young Englishman living on the Cape Coast, suddenly loses his father. He then discovers that his father`s manager has been robbing the business for years, and that he (Dick) is penniless. He has to earn his living; becomes manager of a gold mine, and afterwards takes service under General Wolseley and goes gallantly through the Ashanti war.
