CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS CHAPTER 1 : VACATION DAY “All students converge at the assembly hall for our closing assembly and ceremony”. The voice of the senior housemaster for Kumasi Academy echoed through the siren. We all converge at the assembly hall in a twinkle of an eye because we’ve long waited for this moment to arrive and once it was here what was the delay? After getting seated, because of the upcoming celebrations, there was too much noise in the hall making it seem like it was an entertainment we were holding. We had every right to make those silly noises because we’ve been in school for too long. “Will you all shut up”!! a male’s voice came like thunder from the connected microphone. We all noticed the person immediately he started speaking. It was our head of academics whose real name wasn’t familiar with us but we usually called him Okonkwo because he taught English language, literature to be precise. His behaviour was similar to that of Okonkwo in the story. The room was immediately very quiet and even ants passing by’s footsteps could be heard. This was because we knew his abilities. He could easily debordinize or dismiss you form the school. We began the ceremony shortly after he spoke. Our assistant headmaster was present but our headmaster due to some complicated reasons was on a house arrest stuff. In fact, all teaching and most non teaching staff were present. We sang some songs including the school anthem and said some prayers and our assistant head master, Mr. Amofa began speaking. “Good day students”!! Good day sir!! Some responded joyfully, some reluctantly and the rest not at all. He spoke about our conduct at school and some advice as to how we should behave at home. It seems only a few listened to that. And when he mentioned of our going home, hehe everyone was paying rapt attention to him. He told us we would be spending almost two months at home and we chuckled knowing it won’t keep long before it will come.
