They make psychology increasingly dependent on physiology and external observation, and tend to think of matter as something much more solid and indubitable than mind. Meanwhile the physicists, especially Einstein and other exponents of the theory of relativity, have been making "matter" less and less material. Their world consists of "events," from which "matter" is derived by a logical construction. Whoever reads, for example, Professor Eddington`s "Space, Time and Gravitation" (Cambridge University Press, 1920), will see that an old-fashioned materialism can receive no support from modern physics. I think that what has permanent value in the outlook of the behaviourists is the feeling that physics is the most fundamental science at present in existence. But this position cannot be called materialistic, if, as seems to be the case, physics does not assume the existence of matter.

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell was first published in 1949. Synonomous with an overbearing, controlling government, Orwells dystopian science-fiction novel is the story of Winston Smith, a citizen of Oceania, one of three totalitarian states that rules the world. The other two are Eurasia and Eastasia, and the three are constantly at war, with Oceania at times being allies with Eurasia - other times with Eastasia. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth where he spends his days rewriting historical records to match with the version of history that the state proclaims as true on any given day. Oceania is ruled by the Party along with Big Brother, and the state constantly watches over its citizens, and purges any that are guilty of not falling in line with the regime. Winston harbours dreams of revolting against the rule, but must be careful not to speak this, as he realises he is already a thoughtcriminal - one of the many Newspeak words that have come into existence since the emergence of the Party. बैताल पचीसी (वेताल पचीसी या बेताल पच्चीसी (संस्कृत:बेतालपञ्चविंशतिका) पच्चीस कथाओं से युक्त एक ग्रन्थ है। इसके रचयिता बेतालभट्ट बताये जाते हैं जो न्याय के लिये प्रसिद्ध राजा विक्रम के नौ रत्नों में से एक थे। ये कथायें राजा विक्रम की न्याय-शक्ति का बोध कराती हैं। बेताल प्रतिदिन एक कहानी सुनाता है और अन्त में राजा से ऐसा प्रश्न कर देता है कि राजा को उसका उत्तर देना ही पड़ता है। उसने शर्त लगा रखी है कि अगर राजा बोलेगा तो वह उससे रूठकर फिर से पेड़ पर जा लटकेगा। लेकिन यह जानते हुए भी सवाल सामने आने पर राजा से चुप नहीं रहा जाता।

राजा हरिश्चंद्र को बच्चे नहीं हो रहे थे. उन्होंने वरुण देवता की पूजा की और उनसे कहा कि अगर आप मुझे एक बेटा दे दें तो मैं उसी को यज्ञ पशु बना कर आपका यज्ञ करूंगा. वरुण देवता ने कहा ओके और डील डन हो गई. हरिश्चंद्र का बेटा हुआ और उसका नाम रखा गया रोहित. वरुण भगवान ने कहा चलो बेटा अब यज्ञ कराओ. हरिश्चंद्र को बच्चे पर प्यार आ रहा था. उसने कहा जब बच्चा 10 महीने का हो जाएगा तभी यज्ञ के लायक होगा. भगवान वरुण बोले ठीक. फिर 10 महीने बाद वरुण के पूछने पर हरिश्चंद्र ने कहा कि बच्चे के दांत निकल आने दीजिए. फिर यज्ञ करेंगे. pic credit - Wikipedia

यह लेख भगत सिंह ने जेल में रहते हुए लिखा था और यह 27 सितम्बर 1931 को लाहौर के अखबार “ द पीपल “ में प्रकाशित हुआ । इस लेख में भगतसिंह ने ईश्वर कि उपस्थिति पर अनेक तर्कपूर्ण सवाल खड़े किये हैं और इस संसार के निर्माण , मनुष्य के जन्म , मनुष्य के मन में ईश्वर की कल्पना के साथ साथ संसार में मनुष्य की दीनता , उसके शोषण , दुनिया में व्याप्त अराजकता और और वर्गभेद की स्थितियों का भी विश्लेषण किया है । यह भगत सिंह के लेखन के सबसे चर्चित हिस्सों में रहा है। स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी बाबा रणधीर सिंह 1930-31के बीच लाहौर के सेन्ट्रल जेल में कैद थे। वे एक धार्मिक व्यक्ति थे जिन्हें यह जान कर बहुत कष्ट हुआ कि भगतसिंह का ईश्वर पर विश्वास नहीं है। वे किसी तरह भगत सिंह की कालकोठरी में पहुँचने में सफल हुए और उन्हें ईश्वर के अस्तित्व पर यकीन दिलाने की कोशिश की। असफल होने पर बाबा ने नाराज होकर कहा, “प्रसिद्धि से तुम्हारा दिमाग खराब हो गया है और तुम अहंकारी बन गए हो जो कि एक काले पर्दे के तरह तुम्हारे और ईश्वर के बीच खड़ी है। इस टिप्पणी के जवाब में ही भगतसिंह ने यह लेख लिखा।

श्रीमद्भगवद्‌गीता हिन्दुओं के पवित्रतम ग्रन्थों में से एक है। महाभारत के अनुसार कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध में भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने गीता का सन्देश अर्जुन को सुनाया था। यह महाभारत के भीष्मपर्व के अन्तर्गत दिया गया एक उपनिषद् है। भगवत गीता में एकेश्वरवाद, कर्म योग, ज्ञानयोग, भक्ति योग की बहुत सुन्दर ढंग से चर्चा हुई है। श्रीमद्भगवद्‌गीता की पृष्ठभूमि महाभारत का युद्ध है। जिस प्रकार एक सामान्य मनुष्य अपने जीवन की समस्याओं में उलझकर किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ हो जाता है और जीवन की समस्यायों से लड़ने की बजाय उससे भागने का मन बना लेता है उसी प्रकार अर्जुन जो महाभारत के महानायक थे, अपने सामने आने वाली समस्याओं से भयभीत होकर जीवन और क्षत्रिय धर्म से निराश हो गए थे, अर्जुन की तरह ही हम सभी कभी-कभी अनिश्चय की स्थिति में या तो हताश हो जाते हैं और या फिर अपनी समस्याओं से विचलित होकर भाग खड़े होते हैं। भारत वर्ष के ऋषियों ने गहन विचार के पश्चात जिस ज्ञान को आत्मसात किया उसे उन्होंने वेदों का नाम दिया। इन्हीं वेदों का अंतिम भाग उपनिषद कहलाता है। मानव जीवन की विशेषता मानव को प्राप्त बौद्धिक शक्ति है और उपनिषदों में निहित ज्ञान मानव की बौद्धिकता की उच्चतम अवस्था तो है ही, अपितु बुद्धि की सीमाओं के परे मनुष्य क्या अनुभव कर सकता है उसकी एक झलक भी दिखा देता है। **FAIR USE** Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. चंद्रकांता

शाम का वक्त है, कुछ-कुछ सूरज दिखाई दे रहा है, सुनसान मैदान में एक पहाड़ी के नीचे दो शख्स वीरेंद्रसिंह और तेजसिंह एक पत्थर की चट्टान पर बैठ कर आपस में बातें कर रहे हैं। वीरेंद्रसिंह की उम्र इक्कीस या बाईस वर्ष की होगी। यह नौगढ़ के राजा सुरेंद्रसिंह का इकलौता लड़का है। तेजसिंह राजा सुरेंद्रसिंह के दीवान जीतसिंह का प्यारा लड़का और कुँवर वीरेंद्रसिंह का दिली दोस्त, बड़ा चालाक और फुर्तीला, कमर में सिर्फ खंजर बाँधे, बगल में बटुआ लटकाए, हाथ में एक कमंद लिए बड़ी तेजी के साथ चारों तरफ देखता और इनसे बातें करता जाता है। इन दोनों के सामने एक घोड़ा कसा-कसाया दुरुस्त पेड़ से बँधा हुआ है। कुँवर वीरेंद्रसिंह कह रहे हैं – ‘भाई तेजसिंह, देखो मुहब्बत भी क्या बुरी बला है जिसने इस हद तक पहुँचा दिया। कई दफा तुम विजयगढ़ से राजकुमारी चंद्रकांता की चिट्ठी मेरे पास लाए और मेरी चिट्ठी उन तक पहुँचाई, जिससे साफ मालूम होता है कि जितनी मुहब्बत मैं चंद्रकांता से रखता हूँ उतनी ही चंद्रकांता मुझसे रखती है, हालाँकि हमारे राज्य और उसके राज्य के बीच सिर्फ पाँच कोस का फासला है इस पर भी हम लोगों के किए कुछ भी नहीं बन पड़ता। देखो इस खत में भी चंद्रकांता ने यही लिखा है कि जिस तरह बने, जल्द मिल जाओ।’ तेजसिंह ने जवाब दिया - ‘मैं हर तरह से आपको वहाँ ले जा सकता हूँ, मगर एक तो आजकल चंद्रकांता के पिता महाराज जयसिंह ने महल के चारों तरफ सख्त पहरा बैठा रखा है, दूसरे उनके मंत्री का लड़का क्रूरसिंह उस पर आशिक हो रहा है, ऊपर से उसने अपने दोनों ऐयारों को जिनका नाम नाजिम अली और अहमद खाँ है इस बात की ताकीद करा दी है कि बराबर वे लोग महल की निगहबानी किया करें क्योंकि आपकी मुहब्बत का हाल क्रूरसिंह और उसके ऐयारों को बखूबी मालूम हो गया है। चाहे चंद्रकांता क्रूरसिंह से बहुत ही नफरत करती है और राजा भी अपनी लड़की अपने मंत्री के लड़के को नहीं दे सकता फिर भी उसे उम्मीद बँधी हुई है और आपकी लगावट बहुत बुरी मालूम होती है। अपने बाप के जरिए उसने महाराज जयसिंह के कानों तक आपकी लगावट का हाल पहुँचा दिया है और इसी सबब से पहरे की सख्त ताकीद हो गई है। आप को ले चलना अभी मुझे पसंद नहीं जब तक की मैं वहाँ जा कर फसादियों को गिरफ्तार न कर लूँ।’ ‘इस वक्त मैं फिर विजयगढ़ जा कर चंद्रकांता और चपला से मुलाकात करता हूँ क्योंकि चपला ऐयारा और चंद्रकांता की प्यारी सखी है और चंद्रकांता को जान से ज्यादा मानती है। सिवाय इस चपला के मेरा साथ देने वाला वहाँ कोई नहीं है। जब मैं अपने दुश्मनों की चालाकी और कार्रवाई देख कर लौटूं तब आपके चलने के बारे में राय दूँ। कहीं ऐसा न हो कि बिना समझे-बूझे काम करके हम लोग वहाँ ही गिरफ्तार हो जाएँ।’ वीरेंद्र – ‘जो मुनासिब समझो करो, मुझको तो सिर्फ अपनी ताकत पर भरोसा है लेकिन तुमको अपनी ताकत और ऐयारी दोनों का।’ तेजसिंह – ‘मुझे यह भी पता लगा है कि हाल में ही क्रूरसिंह के दोनों ऐयार नाजिम और अहमद यहाँ आ कर पुनः हमारे महाराजा के दर्शन कर गए हैं। न मालूम किस चालाकी से आए थे। अफसोस, उस वक्त मैं यहाँ न था।’ वीरेंद्र – ‘मुश्किल तो यह है कि तुम क्रूरसिंह के दोनों ऐयारों को फँसाना चाहते हो और वे लोग तुम्हारी गिरफ्तारी की फिक्र में हैं, परमेश्वर कुशल करे। खैर, अब तुम जाओ और जिस तरह बने, चंद्रकांता से मेरी मुलाकात का बंदोबस्त करो।’ तेजसिंह फौरन उठ खड़े हुए और वीरेंद्रसिंह को वहीं छोड़ पैदल विजयगढ़ की तरफ रवाना हुए। वीरेंद्रसिंह भी घोड़े को दरख्त से खोल कर उस पर सवार हुए और अपने किले की तरफ चले गए। बयान - 2 विजयगढ़ में क्रूरसिंह अपनी बैठक के अंदर नाजिम और अहमद दोनों ऐयारों के साथ बातें कर रहा है। क्रूरसिंह – ‘देखो नाजिम, महाराज का तो यह ख्याल है कि मैं राजा होकर मंत्री के लड़के को कैसे दामाद बनाऊँ, और चंद्रकांता वीरेंद्रसिंह को चाहती है। अब कहो कि मेरा काम कैसे निकले? अगर सोचा जाए कि चंद्रकांता को ले कर भाग जाऊँ, तो कहाँ जाऊँ और कहाँ रह कर आराम करूँ? फिर ले जाने के बाद मेरे बाप की महाराज क्या दुर्दशा करेंगे? इससे तो यही मुनासिब होगा कि पहले वीरेंद्रसिंह और उसके ऐयार तेजसिंह को किसी तरह गिरफ्तार कर किसी ऐसी जगह ले जा कर खपा डाला जाए कि हजार वर्ष तक पता न लगे, और इसके बाद मौका पा कर महाराज को मारने की फिक्र की जाए, फिर तो मैं झट गद्दी का मालिक बन जाऊँगा और तब अलबत्ता अपनी जिंदगी में चंद्रकांता से ऐश कर सकूँगा। मगर यह तो कहो कि महाराज के मरने के बाद मैं गद्दी का मालिक कैसे बनूँगा? लोग कैसे मुझे राजा बनाएँगे।’ नाजिम - हमारे राजा के यहाँ बनिस्बत काफिरों के मुसलमान ज्यादा हैं, उन सभी को आपकी मदद के लिए मैं राजी कर सकता हूँ और उन लोगों से कसम खिला सकता हूँ कि महाराज के बाद आपको राजा मानें, मगर शर्त यह है कि काम हो जाने पर आप भी हमारे मजहब मुसलमानी को कबूल करें? .....

जब नमक का नया विभाग बना और ईश्वरप्रदत्त वस्तु के व्यवहार करने का निषेध हो गया तो लोग चोरी-छिपे इसका व्यापार करने लगे। अनेक प्रकार के छल-प्रपंचों का सूत्रपात हुआ, कोई घूस से काम निकालता था, कोई चालाकी से। अधिकारियों के पौ-बारह थे। पटवारीगिरी का सर्वसम्मानित पद छोड-छोडकर लोग इस विभाग की बरकंदाजी करते थे। इसके दारोगा पद के लिए तो वकीलों का भी जी ललचाता था। यह वह समय था जब ऍंगरेजी शिक्षा और ईसाई मत को लोग एक ही वस्तु समझते थे। फारसी का प्राबल्य था। प्रेम की कथाएँ और शृंगार रस के काव्य पढकर फारसीदाँ लोग सर्वोच्च पदों पर नियुक्त हो जाया करते थे। मुंशी वंशीधर भी जुलेखा की विरह-कथा समाप्त करके सीरी और फरहाद के प्रेम-वृत्तांत को नल और नील की लडाई और अमेरिका के आविष्कार से अधिक महत्व की बातें समझते हुए रोजगार की खोज में निकले। उनके पिता एक अनुभवी पुरुष थे। समझाने लगे, 'बेटा! घर की दुर्दशा देख रहे हो। ॠण के बोझ से दबे हुए हैं। लडकियाँ हैं, वे घास-फूस की तरह बढती चली जाती हैं। मैं कगारे पर का वृक्ष हो रहा हूँ, न मालूम कब गिर पडूँ! अब तुम्हीं घर के मालिक-मुख्तार हो। 'नौकरी में ओहदे की ओर ध्यान मत देना, यह तो पीर का मजार है। निगाह चढावे और चादर पर रखनी चाहिए। ऐसा काम ढूँढना जहाँ कुछ ऊपरी आय हो। मासिक वेतन तो पूर्णमासी का चाँद है, जो एक दिन दिखाई देता है और घटते-घटते लुप्त हो जाता है। ऊपरी आय बहता हुआ स्रोत है जिससे सदैव प्यास बुझती है। वेतन मनुष्य देता है, इसी से उसमें वृध्दि नहीं होती। ऊपरी आमदनी ईश्वर देता है, इसी से उसकी बरकत होती हैं, तुम स्वयं विद्वान हो, तुम्हें क्या समझाऊँ।...

बेनीमाधव सिंह गौरीपुर गाँव के जमींदार और नम्बरदार थे। उनके पितामह किसी समय बड़े धन-धान्य संपन्न थे। गाँव का पक्का तालाब और मंदिर जिनकी अब मरम्मत भी मुश्किल थी, उन्हीं की कीर्ति-स्तंभ थे। कहते हैं, इस दरवाजे पर हाथी झूमता था, अब उसकी जगह एक बूढ़ी भैंस थी, जिसके शरीर में अस्थि-पंजर के सिवा और कुछ शेष न रहा था; पर दूध शायद बहुत देती थी; क्योंकि एक न एक आदमी हाँड़ी लिये उसके सिर पर सवार ही रहता था। बेनीमाधव सिंह अपनी आधी से अधिक संपत्ति वकीलों को भेंट कर चुके थे। उनकी वर्तमान आय एक हजार रुपये वार्षिक से अधिक न थी। ठाकुर साहब के दो बेटे थे। बड़े का नाम श्रीकंठ सिंह था। उसने बहुत दिनों के परिश्रम और उद्योग के बाद बी. ए. की डिग्री प्राप्त की थी। अब एक दफ्तर में नौकर था। छोटा लड़का लालबिहारी सिंह दोहरे बदन का, सजीला जवान था। भरा हुआ मुखड़ा, चौड़ी छाती। भैंस का दो सेर ताजा दूध वह उठ कर सबेरे पी जाता था। श्रीकंठ सिंह की दशा बिलकुल विपरीत थी। इन नेत्रप्रिय गुणों को उन्होंने बी. ए.-इन्हीं दो अक्षरों पर न्योछावर कर दिया था। इन दो अक्षरों ने उनके शरीर को निर्बल और चेहरे को कांतिहीन बना दिया था। इसी से वैद्यक ग्रंथों पर उनका विशेष प्रेम था। आयुर्वैदिक औषधियों पर उनका अधिक विश्वास था। शाम-सबेरे से उनके कमरे से प्रायः खरल की सुरीली कर्णमधुर ध्वनि सुनायी दिया करती थी। लाहौर और कलकत्ते के वैद्यों से बड़ी लिखा-पढ़ी रहती थी। .......
